My students seem to really really (over-)appreciate my “helpful” explanations, yet they’re off-the-cuff and not as nice as the carefully-thought-out ones in the book. So I think I’m observing the same disconnect as you: That students aren’t getting much out of the written material (though I desperately need them to).
