Designing simple geared mechanical animation

The IEEE Spectrum animation blog recently had a cool article about a program by Disney for designing simple mechanical animated figures, which pointed to a YouTube video released by the Disney Research Hub:

The software allows designing simple geared linkages for driving cyclical motion over arbitrary 2D paths, allowing animation of realistic leg motions of animals, for example. The designs can be 3D printed (or perhaps made with a combination of 3D printing and laser cutting), and the video shows both simulated output and 3D-printed models.

Unfortunately, it does not look like they are planning to release the software any time soon, though it would be welcomed by the Maker community.
