Poetry books are not always financially viable
How about self-published textbooks? ;-) Worth the effort?
The second question is a serious one.

My self-published textbook has so far returned me royalties of about $300, which is not much pay for about a year’s worth of work (not to mention several hundred dollars of parts and tools to do the labs needed for the book). So financially, it has not yet been rewarding and may never be. It has been emotionally rewarding and would be even more so if there were a community of teachers who adopted the book.
