Spit kit sent

I sent in my spit kit (formally “ORAgene⋅Dx For collection of human DNA”) to Dante Labs for whole-genome sequencing (WGS) for myself yesterday, as the next step after ordering the sequencing as mentioned in Personal genome sequencing.

I expect that it will take about 3 months before I have any data from them, as they are not paying for quick turnaround from the sequencing labs, and even quick turnaround would be a couple of weeks with the low-cost sequencing methods.   Sometime this summer I’ll either be posting some (limited) information about the results or complaining about a scam—we’ll have to wait and see.

  1. Hi, just wondering if you have any update on this? Dante Labs have a black Friday offer which is quite appealing (€169 for 30X WGS) but I see a lot of negative experiences online with them.

    • I am now 99% convinced that Dante Labs is a scam—perhaps a Ponzi scheme where they use the money collected from new purchasers to pay for sequencing some of the earlier purchasers. They claimed on Aug 31 that my raw data was ready. When I asked them for it, they claimed on Oct 9 that my data was “among the next few to be shipped”, but I still haven’t seen any data from them of any kind.

If they aren’t a scam, then they are totally incompetent. In either case, I would recommend not giving them any of your money.

      • Wow, sorry to hear that but thanks a lot for letting me know. I was getting suspicious as the only people who seem to have received their results (even on time) are those that receive a free kit to post a nice review…

I think I will go with 23andMe for now, at least I can expect to receive some results and a coherent report, and other platforms seem to accept their raw data (unlike Dante).

I hope you’re able to get some money back!

      • Hi – Andrea from Dante Labs here. Can you please present evidence that Dante Labs is a scam?

Your case is a case where we made a mistake, you experienced delays. Some people experienced delays in 2018. Thousands of people received their data and reports.

Claiming that we are a scam is a serious accusation. How do you reconcile that with the fact that people are actually receiving results?

I am here to have a constructive discussion. I am confused why you make baseless accusations.

        Thanks,

        Andrea
