Gas station without pumps

One year later

Those of you who’ve been following my blog for a while will remember that last year I had my whole head shaved for the St. Baldrick’s cancer-research fund-raiser.  They are doing the fundraiser again this year (on Nov 7), though I’m not participating this time.

I did not get my hair cut nor trim my beard for a full year (I did trim my mustache to keep it out of my mouth and shave my cheeks).  Here is what a year’s hair growth looks like:

A full year’s growth of hair.

Since getting this picture taken, I’ve gotten a haircut, but I’m still trying to decide what length to keep my beard. It can grow a bit longer without getting too scraggly, but not a lot longer. My wife is fine with it being anywhere from about 6-months’ to 18-months’ growth, as long as it remains neat.

So loyal readers, how much should I trim my beard?

  1. Goatee with waxed handlebars. Braided with beads would also make a statement. Not sure what that statement would be but it would be one hell of a conversation starter in your classes.

  2. It would take another 6 months to a year to grow handlebar mustaches—I’ve kept the mustache trimmed. Besides, my students think I’m evil enough without my looking like Snidely Whiplash.

Dwarven-style braided beards look like a lot of work to maintain—the recently popular Viking style looks a bit silly to me, and still more work than I care for on a daily basis.

  3. Being a visually “alternately enabled” person means I probably don’t have a meaningful contribution other than to say, “don’t forget comfort” and “make sure it’s short enough so people can see that smile :-)”

    • Comfort is always high on my list for any “fashion” decision. I don’t think anyone really sees my smiles—I’ve never gone in for big grins and subtler smiles are hidden by any sort of beard or mustache.
