I released the new version of the book today, with all my edits from the summer and fall.  I’ve also raised the minimum price (to $5.99 from $4.99).  Anyone who bought the book or used a free coupon in the past can get the new version for free.  The URL has changed—it is now, though the old URL should re-direct.

Students in BME 51A for Winter 2019 should have just gotten their coupons for free copies.

I expect to do a few more edits in the later chapters (those for BME 51B instead of BME 51A) in the next couple of weeks, with another release in the first week of January, but the book is basically done (for this year anyway).

I’m offering a token payment for the first report of any error (25¢ per error, and I’ll scale that up for bigger errors).  For students or tutors in the class, I’ll pay cash at the end of BME 51B.  For anyone else, I’ll pay by PayPal.

The book now has

593 pages
302 figures
12 tables
473 index entries
140 references

  1. The leanpub page has some info on theoretical prerequisites, but nothing on practical ones. It’d be great if there was a bit of info on which kinds of electronics equipment and how accessible it is (are there starter kits available on amazon; does it require expensive equipment). In other words .. it’s not clear to me how much hardware I’d need to acquire to follow exercises if I wanted.

    • Thanks, I improved the “about the book” blurb to mention that the equipment needed is described in the Preface, which is included in the free sample chapters. Let me know if the preface is unclear or confusing—I have not edited it very carefully recently.

  2. I was unable to download the book (from the new URL, as it happens) by going to Leanpub’s web site. However, the download link in leanpub’s announcement email worked for me. This is probably from using noscript to block advertising network javascript from running in my browser. I’ve been able to download previous versions from Leankit, so perhaps they have recently introduced a dependency on allowing advertising networks to advertise on their site in order to allow download links to work, perhaps accidentally.

Just FYI in case anyone else runs into the same problem. Just use the direct download link Leanpub sends in email.

    • Send your comment to “” and they will check into the problem. They are pretty good about making quick fixes to their web site—the change of URL for the book was not working on Thursday and they got it fixed by this afternoon.

      • I tested and can’t reproduce the download link problem; I can now download from the web page successfully. Whether they fixed it or PEBKAC I don’t know, but I know I at least tried to click on “PDF” last night. Good to know that they have been responsive!
