Forty-sixth weight progress report

This post is yet another weight progress report, continuing the previous one, part of a long series since I started in January 2015.

My weight has not stabilized as I thought in August, but has continued to go up.

I’m now at the heaviest weight I’ve ever been, getting dangerously close to a BMI of 25 (the threshold for being overweight).

My exercise has been very limited—I averaged only 0.79 miles a day of bicycling in September and October and probably not much more in walking (about 90k steps per month—way down from the 150k in July). I think I’ve only cycled up the hill to campus twice all summer—I haven’t even ridden the newly repaved bike path. Because bike commuting was my main source of exercise, I remain concerned about how I’m going to get fit again—exercising at home does not seem to happen, even when I promise myself that I’ll do some today.

  1. One thing I’ve done which helped me lose weight (inadvertently) is intermittent fasting. I’ve been interested in intermittent fasting since reading about some early research into it and some possible health benefits. In particular, there is a lot of Alzheimer’s in my family and there are some hypothesis that some fasting may help in this regard. I don’t really believe that in the long run that fasting will be shown to be helpful for Alzheimer’s but I guess it doesn’t hurt to try. Anyways, I lost some weight doing this. I also find it helps some of my sports activities because I’m now a bit less sensitive to when I eat prior to exercise.

  2. If I had the willpower to do intermittent fasting, I would have the willpower to stop snacking while working from home and to exercise even though I don’t have to do my bike commute now.

Alas, I don’t seem to have that willpower. Having the commute and not eating lunch at work was much easier.

My big diet several years ago now, involved making a big lunch of raw vegetables (lots of bulk, few calories). I’m going to have to see if I can get myself to do that again.
